Aromatherapy is the use of concentrated essential oils (plant essences) to relieve stress, enhance health and wellbeing, prevent problems and support the healing process.
Essential oils are highly fragrant fluids that are stored in specialist cells within flowers, leaves, seeds, roots, fruits and woods depending on the plant. The fluids evaporate quickly and have many actions to support the health of the plant including deterring or attracting insects and animals, or fighting fungus or bacteria. All essential oils are antibacterial to a greater or lesser degree, and each essential oil has distinct therapeutic properties that can improve the body’s natural functioning and so help to prevent disease. Studies indicate that the oils can have stimulant or relaxing, anti-infectious, and anti-inflammatory properties amongst others.
The ability of essential oils to have a psychologically calming or uplifting effect is directly linked to the influence of their wonderful aromas – one that depends on the close relationship between the process of smelling and the brain. Having aromas that were attractive and beneficial to humans has certainly played a part in plant evolution, as those plants are more likely to be nurtured and cared for by human settlements.
What should I expect during treatment?
When you attend for a consultation you will be asked questions about yourself, your lifestyle, the past health of yourself and your family, and about your problem or illness. This detail is necessary because each treatment is highly individual and designed to your particular needs. All information will be held in the strictest confidence.
Essential oils are naturally highly concentrated and must be diluted before being applied to the skin. As well as massage there are many other methods of applying essential oils – in lotions, gels, ointments, compresses and creams or vaporisation and inhalation. An aromatherapy massage combines the benefits of essential oils with those of therapeutic massage which is a pleasurable and effective method of healing
During the massage your modesty will be protected at all times – you’ll be completely covered with towels and only the area being worked on will be uncovered.
